Mission

MISSION, Texas was established in 1824 by Oblate Fathers on a site three miles south of the present city. Priests are said to have planted an orange grove that was one of the first experiments with citrus culture in the lower Rio Grande Valley. Mission has since become an agricultural center for all citrus and celebrates this industry with the annual Texas Citrus Fiesta in January.

The city of Mission, Texas welcomes visitors to our beautiful community, featuring the perfect places to shop, dine, stay and play. Located between the rolling hills of Roma and the serene beaches of South Padre Island, Mission, Texas basks in radiant and invigorating sunshine. Come camp, golf, kayak, and hike or bike miles of trails. Visitors can enjoy tropical South Texas wildlife at the World Birding Center Headquarters and a true butterfly paradise at the National Butterfly Center.
