Fort Davis, Texas, In the 1850's the route that became known as the Overland Trail cut through Apache territory and across the Comanche Trail. Fort Davis was one of a string of forts set up to protect the mail and westbound travelers. Established in 1854, Fort Davis was named after Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War in the Pierce administration. Even after the fort had served its usefulness as a military outpost, the town continued to prosper as a center for ranching.

Today, Fort Davis year round temperate climate, big skies and surrounding natural beauty attract birders, stargazers, hikers, tri-athletes, cyclists, campers and people who just wants to relax.
