Killeen, like many other towns in Texas, was founded in 1882 when therailroad installed a switching station at the midway point between Temple and Lampasas. Located right off IH-35 in Central Texas, Killeen became Camp Hood, now Fort Hood in 1942 and remains one of the fastest growing cities in Texas. Fort Hood, is currently the largest military installation in the World. It is home to the 1st Cavalry Division and 4th Infantry Division, Headquarters Command III Corps and 3rd Signal Brigade. This 340-square mile installation paints a picture that is a combination of rich history and 21st century technology. Two exceptional museums tell the story of the 1st Cavalry Division and the 4th Infantry Division. Exhibits featuring General Patton speaking to his troops, photos, memorabilia of Elvis's time here, and Desert Storm, are highlighted in the museums displaying the proud history of Fort Hood. The 1st Cavalry Division horse detachment performs for special events in authentic costumes with hand made saddles and accessories. Plan on bringing the whole family for a variety of fun activities.
