Sonora
Sonora, Texas Located at the crossroads of Interstate 10 and Highway 277, Sonora was founded in 1889. After a few enterprising young men drilled a water well, on what is now the the Sutton County Courthouse Square, pioneers appeared virtually overnight, pitched their tents, watered their livestock, and prepared to stay. That friendly pioneer spirit can still be found in handshakes and smiles in Sonora. Sonora has long been known as the Stockman's Paradise.
Sonora is also well know for the Caverns of Sonora. Considered to be one of the most beautiful and unusual caves in the United States, the Caverns of Sonora is a stunning example of some of nature's most awe-inspiring creations. Its beauty cannot be exaggerated even by Texans, says Bill Stephens, Founder of the National Speleological Society.
As you stroll leisurely on your personally guided tour you'll witness a subterranean wonderland filled with glittering, crystal-like stalagmites and stalactites. Millions of years in the making, these delicate formations are still active and continue to change at their own unhurried pace.
