Emporia

EMPORIA, TEXAS . Emporia was a sawmill settlement on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway twelve miles south of Lufkin in southern Angelina County. In the 1890s lumberman Samuel Fain Carter built a saw and planing mill there. Around 1900 the mill had fifty employees and produced 40,000 board feet of lumber a day. A post office operated at the site from 1893 to 1907, when it merged with nearby Diboll. After the mill closed in 1906, most of the local residents left, and by the 1920s the site was abandoned.
