Nile

NILE, TEXAS . Nile was on the International and Great Northern line nine miles west of Rockdale in southwestern Milam County. It is said to have been named after the Nile River in Egypt. A post office opened at Nile in 1890, and in 1892 the community population was reported as fourteen. Nile had two cotton gins, a general store, and thirty-five residents in 1896. Forty-three students attended the one-teacher school in 1903. By 1914 the population had fallen to twenty-five, and in 1916 the post office was discontinued. The Nile school was consolidated with the Thorndale Independent School District in 1946, after which no further information was available.
