Loma Alta

Loma Alta is on U.S. Highway 277 between Open Hollow and Miers Draw, 2? miles southwest of Vinegarone in east central Val Verde County. It was founded by the Davis family, who moved to the area in February 1906; the Davis brothers, Ray, Lin, and Emery, took up ranchland in the area and raised families there. Loma Alta stands at an altitude of 2,007 feet above sea level; its name is Spanish for "high hill" or "knoll." In the 1970s Loma Alta served the ranching community and tourists with a gas station and a store. In 2000 the population was thirty.
